About Waiheke

Waiheke Island is a picture perfect island known as the jewel of the Hauraki Gulf. Just a 35 minute ferry trip from downtown Auckland, the island boasts beautiful beaches, vineyards, olive groves, farmland, forest and a regional park.

With a permanent population of 8000, Waiheke Island is a popular weekend and tourist destination. During peak summer months the island can accommodate up to 20,000 visitors.

Waiheke Island boasts beautiful beaches. With 131km of coastline, white sand beaches stretch along Waiheke’s north shores with Oneroa, Palm Beach and Onetangi being the most popular for visitors. Many other beautiful beaches are accessible only by sea. The southern side beaches are great for boating, and at full tide offer calm swimming beaches - Blackpool, Surfdale, and Rocky Bay.

Waiheke Island hosts numerous weekend events including the Jazz festival, the Wine and Food festival, and the Winter Blues festival. You may want to plan a visit, or your wedding to coincide with one of these.

Explore

There are dozens of walking tracks along the coast and through bush, including the Headlands Sculpture walk around Matiatia, Owhanake Bay coastal walk and Whakanewha National Park.

Exploring the island by car is another option; take half a day to visit the eastern end of the island. This hosts the Stonybatter historic gun emplacement, spectacular views and several remote beaches. You pass Passage Rock and View East vineyards which offer wonderful places to stop for lunch.

Wine & Dine

Waiheke is home to, at last count, 26 wineries, many of which offer tastings, tours or food - from casual tasting platters to award-winning fine dining. Some have been internationally awarded – Te Motu, Te Whau and Cable Bay to name a few.

Art

In addition to a thriving Community Art Gallery, many locally and nationally renowned artists have studios on Waiheke open to the public on the island to discover. There is also a sculpture park at the eastern end of the island (by appointment only) and the island hosts the outdoor ‘Sculpture on the Gulf’ exhibition every two years.

Get Active

Hire bikes or explore the coast by foot, kayak or a yacht charter. – From half day excursions to overnight trips. Other activities offered are golf, windsurfing, archery and fishing charters. There are year-round activities on the island for everyone’s entertainment.
